Kimmo Pikkarainen's penalty decides the derby against Bolzano

In the fifth derby this season between Bolzano and Ritten, second place in Serie A was at stake. The “Rittner Buam” won the duel against the record champions and celebrated their eighth championship win in a row. They now have a two-point lead over the white-reds in the table. HC Pustertal is the undisputed leader, nine points ahead of Ritten. Today Pustertal defeated old champions Cortina 5:3.

For the Rittners it was the 30th derby win against Bozen, the second this winter. The home team had to make do without captain Ingemar Gruber, and Christian Walcher was missing from Bozen. HCB coach Adolf Insam was able to rely on defender Mika Lehtinen for the first time.

Bolzano got off to a dream start and took the lead in just 2.56 minutes. The precise pass from Rhett Gordon to Danny Irmen, who surprised Cloutier with a diagonal shot. It was the 26th goal of the season for the 13-year-old Bolzano striker. In the 17.34 minute Dan Tudin had to go to the penalty box. Marco Insam, who had the advantage, deflected a hammer shot from Ruggeri just out of bounds. Immediately afterwards, Mazzolini also missed the Rittner goal. The hosts were seen for the first time 15 seconds before the break, but Matt Zaba was able to save the narrow 1-0 lead into the break.

The middle third began with a brilliant save by Cloutier on a counterattack by Colton Fretter. In the 30.00 minute Anton Bernard also tried it, the Rittner goalkeeper made another safe save. Two minutes later Ritten equalized with Dan Tudin to make it 1-1. Zaba was only able to fend off Ploner's shot briefly and Rittner's number 19 thanked him with the equalizer. In the last five minutes of the middle third, Mazzolini, Gordon (twice) and Ruggeri missed four good chances to give Bozen the lead. After forty minutes the score remained 1-1.

But only until the 40.39 minute, when Cloutier didn't look good when Danny Irmen shot from distance. The puck slipped under the leg pads into the goal to make it 2.1. In the 45.00 minute there was a huge chance for Watson, who stormed towards Zaba's goal alone, but was then denied by the Kandier. Three minutes later, Bernard was denied by Cloutier. Ritten was able to equalize again in the 56.44 minute. Baker played Watson free and he scored to make it 2-2. So the game went into overtime. Both teams showed a strong performance. Scandella had the best chance in the 63rd minute, Cloutier saved his goal with a brilliant save. The penalty shootout had to decide the match. Baker, Watson and Pikkarainen awarded the first three penalties for Ritten, Irmen, Fretter and Scandella for Bozen. After another mistake by Mazzolin, Kimmo Pikkarainen finally scored to make it 3-2.

Pustertal defeated Cortina in the last six minutes In the evening's TV game, league leaders Pustertal with new goalkeeper Strömberg defeated bottom team Cortina 5:3. Until six minutes before the end of the game it was still a 3-3 draw and there was no sign of the 47 point difference in the table. Then Nate DiCasmirro gave the “Wolves” the lead and 35 seconds before the end of the game, Taggart Desmet finally closed the bag. Lynn Loyns, Max Oberrauch and Patrick Bona had previously scored for HC Pustertal, Jonas Johansson, Andrea Moser and Mattias Wennerberg for Cortina.

The next round of the championship will take place on Saturday, January 15th. Pustertal welcomes Pontebba, Ritten meets Fassa away and Cortina is a guest in the Bolzano Eiswelle. In the direct encounters between Bolzano and Cortina this year it is a 2-2 draw. The White-Reds won the first two matches 3-0 and 4-1, but then lost the third and fourth games 2-4 and 2-5.
