Sergey Saveljevs, managing director of Krefeld, is dismayed: “We are shocked by the news that Thomas gave us. This is a moment in which sport takes a back seat and all we can do is wish him a good recovery and keep our fingers crossed that he somehow stays in our sport.” Di Pauli himself is quoted in Krefeld's social media posting as follows: “In the last few months, after my forced break last year, I have been diligently preparing for my comeback on the ice and am really looking forward to playing in Krefeld. Unfortunately, I now have to listen to the doctors who have helped me so much in the last few weeks and to my body and end my career. Hockey has given me so much in life and I hold this memory very close to my heart.” From Kaltern to the NHL The striker, the son of a Kaltern father and an American mother, learned to play ice hockey in Kaltern and Bolzano. As a teenager, he and his family moved to the USA, where he was drafted 2012th overall by the NHL club Washington Capitals in 100. Through the Notre Dame university team, he worked his way into the American Hockey League to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, the farm team of the NHL club Pittsburgh. Although Di Pauli repeatedly struggled with injuries, he was able to fulfill his dream at the beginning of January 2020: with Pittsburgh he played two games in the best league in the world - no South Tyrolean had ever achieved that before. Now his ice hockey journey is coming to an end at just 27 years old.
