Pond Hockey Championship on Ritten officially presented

OC boss Wolfgang Holzner and his organizational team invited people to the official presentation. The organizers explained how the idea for this event came about: “My brother-in-law Dan Tudin – he is a current Italian national player and is under contract with the Rittner Buam – comes from Canada and brought the idea of pond hockey to the Ritten. I myself attended such an event at Rießersee to get an idea of what an event like this is like. After two test runs on a smaller scale in the last two years, we decided to organize such a tournament on a larger scale at the beginning of January and announce it as a European Championship.” The Italian-American Dan Tudin briefly discussed the origins of this sport at the press conference: “The Canadian Indians used to practice this sport. In Canada, where there is snow and ice for almost four months, this original form of ice hockey was played on huge pitches, at the time without skates. It wasn't until the English came to Canada that people started playing with ice skates. There are six to seven such tournaments in Canada, with more than 200 teams. One of them is always held as a world championship.” Active participant Stefan Zisser, former HC Bozen player and EBEL winner in 2014, said about this event: “Playing ice hockey outdoors is always a dream. As children, our parents always took us to places where we could play ice hockey in the winter. I will also take part with my team, the HC youth club. We are certainly not among the favorites, because pond hockey primarily requires technique. Anyone who knows me knows where my weaknesses were as an active hockey player,” said the former Italian national player with a smile.

What is pond hockey?

The term “pond hockey” comes from English and means something like “pond hockey” and describes playing on a frozen lake or pond.

Game mode at Ritten: Hockey in its purest form

The participating teams are divided into the TOP DIVISION (players aged 18 – 35) and the GOLD DIVISION (players over 35 years old). Each team consists of a maximum of six players, with three against three played on small goals and without a goalkeeper in a preliminary round and a subsequent knockout round. The game duration is 12 minutes in the preliminary round and 20 minutes in the playoffs (from the semi-finals onwards). The size of the playing area is approximately 12 x 30 meters.

Each division consists of four groups of a maximum of eight teams, with the four best-placed teams advancing to the knockout phase after the group phase. The play-offs begin with the round of 16 and end with the final at the end of the tournament.

The 6st European Pond Hockey Championship will take place on January 7th and 1th in the Ritten Arena in Klobenstein. On the occasion of this event, a press conference was held on Monday in Bolzano at the Vogele inn.
