Brave HCB narrowly admits defeat to Salzburg

HCB coach Kai Suikkanen had to make do in the Salzburg Volksgarten without the injured Matt Climie, Mat Clark, Chris Carlisle and Austin Smith. The suspended attacker Chris DeSousa was also condemned to watch.

Salzburg started the game strongly and established themselves in the attacking third right from the start. While the Mozartstadters were visually superior and the majority of the puck circulated within their ranks, Bozen relied on a compact defense and was repeatedly dangerous with quick counter-attacks. The “Foxes” took the lead in one of these counterattacks: Monardo shot from distance and, with the help of Salzburg goalkeeper Starkbaum, scored to make it 1-0. Afterwards the HCB even had the chance to increase it to 2-0, but Angelidis missed after a fine individual performance. Towards the end of the first third, Salzburg increased the pressure again and came very close to equalizing a few times, but at the latest when the strong Tuokkola in the Bolzano box came to an end.

Bolzano, for their part, had the 2-0 on their stick in a counterattack with Angelidis, but Salzburg equalized the game almost in return: after a careless loss of the target, the puck passed through Huber to Cijan, who netted the score at 1-1. As a result, the HCB freed itself more and more and created several opportunities, but no more goals were scored before the last break.

Right at the beginning of the final period, Salzburg scored its second goal: Schiechl came to the goal in front of Tuokkola, remained cool and shot in for a 2-1 lead. After falling behind, Bozen invested more in the offensive, but repeatedly struggled with Salzburg's defense. On the other hand, the Mozartstadt team missed the best opportunities to make it 3-1 on a few counterattacks. When HCB coach Suikkanen took goalkeeper Tuokkola off the ice shortly before the end for a sixth field player, things got heated several times in front of Salzburg keeper Starkbaum, but the people of Bolzano were unable to score. This sealed the first white-red defeat after five wins in a row.

Brave HCB narrowly admits defeat to Salzburg

After five wins in a row, HCB Südtirol has lost another championship game: In the 33rd EBEL round, the self-sacrificing team from Bolzano suffered a narrow 1:2 away defeat against Red Bull Salzburg.
