Thomas Tragust moves to Innsbruck

In looking for reinforcements with a view to the upcoming return to the Erste Bank Ice Hockey League (EBEL), the Innsbruck club management has found what they are looking for on the other side of the Brenner. Thomas Tragust, who has been one of the Broncos Vipiteno's top performers over the past two years, has been given a one-year contract by the North Tyroleans.

“He is an absolute class man between the posts. He will certainly give us the support we need for the Bundesliga,” Haie chairman Günther Hanschitz is quoted as saying on the club’s website. Tragust himself is looking forward to the new task: “Innsbruck is the perfect solution for me. Here I have the chance to prove myself in a top league, playing in great stadiums and in front of a big crowd. And all of this is not far from home.” At the traditional Tyrolean club, he faces a duel with veteran Patrick Machreich for the position of regular goalie. “After two great years in Vipiteno, I’m really looking forward to this new challenge,” says Tragust, commenting on his move.

95 games for Vipiteno Thomas Tragust played a total of 95 competitive games in the Wipptal over the past two seasons. After he made a significant contribution to the return to Serie A in 2010/11, he was unable to prevent the “Wild Horses” from being relegated again in the past season, even with numerous convincing performances. Vipiteno was his third Serie A stop: he played eight first division games for his hometown club, HC Meran, in 2003/2004, while he played a total of 2007 times for Fassa from 2009 to 92. In the 2009/10 season, “Tschombi” was under contract with ESV Kaufbeuren in the Bundesliga. There he became a crowd favorite with 50 championship appearances.

However, the season in Allgäu was not his first engagement abroad, as the Vinschger native had already tried his hand in the USA in the 2006/07 season. In the North American youth league NAHL, he made 53 competitive appearances for the Texas Tornados.

Tragust has also been part of the Italian national team for six years, for which he took part in four A World Championships and two World Championships in the 1st Division. At the B-WM 2009 he was voted the best goalkeeper of the tournament with a catch rate of 98,2%.

Thomas Tragust moves to Innsbruck

After just two years in Italian ice hockey, the Vinschger goalkeeper is heading abroad again: The 26-year-old national player has made the jump to the top Austrian league, where he will guard the goal for the Innsbruck Haie next season.
