Thomas Tragust settles down: “Bruneck is very special”

In recent years you have acquired a reputation as a migratory bird. What motivated you to extend your contract with HC Pustertal and put an end to the constant club changes?

Thomas Tragust: “First and foremost, it’s about the sporting challenge for me. The HCP has the ambition to be at the forefront. This is of course particularly attractive for a player. It is a well-run club that offers a professional working environment. There is also a fantastic atmosphere in the Rienz Stadium, which makes it a very special ice hockey location.”

What makes Bruneck so special?

“It is an ice hockey-crazy city that is excited about its club. It's not just the atmosphere in the time-honored stadium, this sport is practiced here 365 days a year. And yes, you can say it calmly: This loser image also comes into play. The eternal hunt for the first big title makes this task particularly attractive.”

You mention the title. Have you set yourself the goal of winning the championship for the coming season?

“I really want to bring the AHL championship trophy to Bruneck. As a player, it is important to achieve the maximum and in our case that is the title. Those responsible for the club will plan independently. I don’t yet know what their target is.”

Has the bitter quarter-final exit of the past season been completely digested?

“No, things like that don’t happen so quickly. We impressed in the regular season and in the Master Round, then the season suddenly ended. I think each of us questioned ourselves afterwards and looked for possible causes. This should be a lesson to do better next season.”

At HC Pustertal you not only work as a player, but at the same time you are also involved in the youth sector. What are your tasks there?

“Last year I received my goalkeeper coaching license from the German Ice Hockey Association in Füssen. In this role I look after the youth teams from U10 to U19. In winter I'm on the ice every day from 15 p.m. First I look after the young goalies, then in the evening I have to go to training myself. I really enjoy this combination. That’s one reason why I feel so comfortable in Brunico and why I want to work here for a long time.”

Thomas Tragust has already earned his money at ten clubs in seven different leagues. Now the jack-of-all-trades goalie from Vinschgau is putting down roots in the Puster Valley. He tells us what excites him about his new home.
