Tom Pokel and the Capitals take two points from Bolzano

The game between Bozen and Vienna was already a topic of discussion in advance: In order to comply with the 60-point rule, HC Bozen removed Günther Hell, Matt Sisca and Roland Hofer from the squad immediately before the match. Although you are still under contract with HCB, a return to the ice would put a lot of strain on the transfer contingent (four transfers until February). And then there was the return of master trainer Tom Pokel. He was celebrated by the fans in the ice wave with banners and chants.

However, Pokel was not the only former Bolzano player on the guests' side. The Caps goal was guarded by Matt Zaba. However, he was rarely the focus of attention in the early stages; rather, his teammates stepped on the accelerator. After just four minutes, Foucault was there after Lakos hit the crossbar and made it 1-0 for the Austrian capital club. Bolzano was slow to get into the game. Then it was former Vienna striker Justin Keller, of all people, who used a rebound to make it 13-1 in the 1th minute. On the other side, HCB goalie Hübl couldn't hold on to the puck and Naglich hit the mark. The Viennese went into the break with a 2-1 lead.

In the middle section the guests controlled the action with great skill. The White-Reds showed their usual fighting spirit, but were only rarely able to break through the opposing defense. Only after half the game was over did the HCB increase the speed. A majority situation ultimately played into the home team's hands: the free-standing Derek Nesbitt sank the puck with a powerful shot into the Vienna goal. Now suddenly an open exchange of blows developed in which both teams had the best chances to score.

In the final third, the Capitals initially appeared more calm and took the lead again thanks to an unstoppable finish from Jamie Fraser. But once again Bolzano gave a suitable answer. This time it was Phil DeSimone who gave Zaba the disadvantage and scored the celebrated equalizer. When there were already many signs pointing to an extension, Hartl took care of the cold shower. With a minute and a half to go, he shot Vienna to an ultimately not undeserved 4-3 win.

The league leaders from Vienna celebrated a hard-fought 4-3 win at HC Bozen. The all-important fourth goal came - to the horror of the almost 2.600 spectators - a minute and a half before the end. After the final siren there was still a standing ovation. Namely for Capitals coach Tom Pokel.
