Tuomo Harjula stays at EV Bozen – first steps as a coach

The 34-year-old Finn will work in a dual role at EV Bozen in the future. On the one hand, the wing trains with the combat team and is deployed in the A2 either in an emergency or for tactical reasons.

Last year, Tuomo Harjula had already expressed his wish that he wanted to pursue a coaching career. “In view of the experience, technical know-how and role model character of the likeable Finn, EV Bozen took the opportunity and offered him a corresponding training contract,” writes the Bolzano club in a press release.

It is enshrined in the contract that the Finn can gain his first experience as a coach with the U12 and as an assistant coach with the U20 and can look over the shoulder of an old coaching warhorse like Egon Schenk. At the same time, the club ensures that they have the opportunity to attend the best coaching courses.

“EV Bozen is convinced that with Tuomo Harjula it has a “man for the future” who can be tied to the club in the long term after completing his apprenticeship,” the press release continues.

As a player, Harjula is entering his second season at EV Bozen. Last year he collected 36 points in 43 games for the Talferstädter team. After EV's championship ended after the regular round, he put on the jersey of HC Bozen in Serie A. In a total of 18 matches with the record champions, he scored eight points and celebrated winning the championship title with the red-whites in April.

Harjula began his professional career in the Finnish second division with Kärpät before spending four seasons chasing the puck in more than 200 games in his home country's top division.

In the 2004/05 season, the now 34-year-old moved to EHC Lustenau in the second Austrian league, before the left-handed shooter traveled to Italy, more precisely to Neumarkt, via Denmark for the first time in the 2007/08 season. Harjula remained in the lowlands for three seasons. In 2010/11, the Scandinavian recently put on the jersey in Austria's second division (EHC Bregenzerwald) before traveling to Italy for the second time.

Tuomo Harjula remains with the White Wheasels, who have given the Finn a three-year contract as a player but also as a trainee coach. Harjula will play in the first team, but will also gain experience on the boards in the U20 and U12 teams.
