About the coach, goalie and goals: HCB boss Knoll speaks plainly

In an eight-minute Facebook message, the creator of the HCB spoke about...

… the current situation: “In the last few days we have analyzed the current situation. We are all to blame – I as the sports director as well as Pat Curcio as a coach, but also the players themselves.”

… a reprieve for trainer Pat Curcio: “The coach is a hard worker, he is the first to arrive at the stadium and the last to leave. We spoke to him this week and analyzed what needs to be done better in the future. I still have confidence in Curcio – but in the next three or four games the things we discussed have to work and that’s why the results come.”

… the dismissal of goalie Marcel Melichercik: “Marcel had a very bad start to the season and only had a catch rate of 86 to 87 percent. We lost many games by a goal difference, with one, two or three goals per game going to the goalie. I saw that the players no longer had confidence in their goalkeeper - and that is fatal in a sport like ice hockey, where the goalie makes up a good 60 percent of the team. That’s why we had to react.”

… the injury to new goalkeeper Matt Climie: “Matt was injured after a good game and will be out of the team for six to seven weeks. I am therefore currently looking for a goalie to replace Climie for the next two months. The decision on this will probably be made in the next two or three days. We can’t afford to sign a goalie for the whole season because the goalies get paid in full even if they get injured.”

... the rumors that Austin Smith or Mike Halmo want to leave: "That's new to me. Both Smith and Halmo have never contacted me or said they were unwell. I think Smith will soon be 100 percent fit again, which is very important for us. Without him, the power play no longer worked as well. And Halmo is of course a strong player.” …the goals for the rest of the season: “My wish is still for the team to reach the top six. If that doesn't work, we will do everything we can in the relegation round to secure one remaining ticket for the play-offs - just like we did a few years ago. But I’m still very confident that we can make it into the top six.”
