Four leagues, one name: This is the new IHL

“Together with the league association, we have been working on this concept for more than a year. We now have a uniform format that includes several leagues,” said Andrea Gios, President of the Italian Ice Sports Association.

The eight Italian clubs in the Alps Hockey League play for the highest Italian title. In the cross-border league, an intermediate round will take place from December 26th to January 6th, in which these clubs - including Ritten, Pustertal, Vipiteno and Neumarkt - compete against each other in direct duels. The intermediate table serves both the AHL and the new IHL Elite. The latter will then continue with a Final Four in February. The two best-placed teams in each district will determine the 84th Italian ice hockey champions in a four-person tournament.

Unequal duel for the Supercup

The 2017 Supercup was also presented in Bolzano. The reigning Italian champions Ritten and cup winners Milano Rossoblu, who are also taking part in Serie B this season, will play for this trophy on October 14th in Milan.

4 South Tyrolean teams in the IHL

Speaking of Serie B: This league, which continues to be the highest purely Italian championship, will in future be called the Italy Hockey League, or IHL for short. In addition to Auer, Eppan, Kaltern and Merano, eight other clubs from northern Italy are taking part. They play a simple round trip round until the end of the year. Before the playoff pairings are determined in a master and a relegation round. It starts this Thursday with the first match day.

The former Serie C in a new look

The third division (formerly Serie C) is now called the Italy Hockey League First Division. Eleven teams initially compete in two circles before the best four teams qualify for the quarter-finals. Four teams from South Tyrol are at the start: Vinschgau, HC Pustertal Junior, Vipiteno C and Brixen.

And finally there is the highest women's championship, the so-called Italy Hockey League Womens, in which, in addition to the Eagles Bozen and the Lakers Neumarkt, Alleghe, Turin and Como also take part.

The newly founded Italian Hockey League was presented at a press conference in Bolzano on Monday. It is intended to act as a gathering place for all all-Italian championships in men's and women's ice hockey.
