“Sweet Caroline”: The birth of an English football anthem

After England's 2-0 win against Germany in the quarter-finals of the European Football Championship, tens of thousands of throats rang out at Wembley Stadium: “Sweet Caroline, oh, oh, oh”. How and why US singer Neil Diamond's 1969 song became the anthem of England fans in 2021 is not entirely clear.
