UEFA announced on Tuesday that it had initiated ethics and disciplinary proceedings against the 32-year-old - Arnautovic could miss the top game in Group C on Thursday in the Netherlands. The striker is accused of insulting the Macedonian player Ezgjan Alioski and also making racist comments after his goal to make it 3-1 during the game on Sunday. The North Macedonian association announced on Facebook on Monday evening that it had sent a letter of complaint to UEFA demanding “the harshest punishment for the Austrian national player”. Arnautovic apologizes Immediately after the goal on Sunday, it was seen how David Alaba, the Austrian captain, tried to keep Arnautovic's mouth shut while he was celebrating. The striker then clearly rejected criticism of his behavior. “I am not a racist and will never be one,” Arnautovic emphasized on Monday at the team headquarters in Seefeld, Austria. The former Bremer added on Instagram: "There were a few heated words yesterday in the emotion of the game, for which I would like to apologize - especially to my friends in North Macedonia and Albania." The North Macedonian Alioski said after the game that Arnautovic had apologized to him immediately after the game. At worst, exclusion from the European Championship Immediately after the game, UEFA had not yet started an investigation. Racist statements would be severely punished by UEFA; in the worst case, the European Championship could be over for Arnautovic. Even a ban for the Netherlands game would be bitter for him, as he used to play in the honorary division for Twente Enschede. The loss of Arnautovic would be a significant weakening for the Austrians. He doesn't know exactly what the initiation of proceedings by UEFA would mean. “But of course that would be an extremely bitter loss. We hope for the best, we would miss him a lot,” said Austria’s defense chief Martin Hinteregger on Tuesday in an online media round at the training camp in Seefeld.
