1st Amateur League: A fatal comeback

In the 76th minute of the game between Steinhaus and Hochpustertal, a long ball flew towards the 16 by Steinhaus keeper Ossi Ranalter. The goalkeeper sprinted out of the box, threw himself at the ball - and collided at high speed with the onrushing Hochpustertal attacker Marco Klemm. “One touch, two players screaming in pain – it was immediately clear that more was missing,” said one spectator. Ranalter and Klemm were then taken in the same ambulance to the Bruneck hospital, where doctors diagnosed the keeper with a broken tibia, while the attacker's knee was badly damaged.

The end of his career was two years ago King football once again showed its ugly face - especially when you take a closer look at Ossi Ranalter's story. The 31-year-old had actually already finished football. The intervertebral discs had been giving him a hard time since the fall of 2014, which is why he had already hung up his gloves on the much-quoted nail. Only once did he step into the breach for his Steinhauser in a playoff, otherwise he preferred to spend his Sundays on the mountain, climbing or ski touring.

Because Steinhauser's regular goalkeeper was injured last week and the AhrntalerKlub was on red alert, Ranalter agreed to go in goal. “It was agreed that I would help out once or twice in emergencies. I had fun during the game itself, knew the spectators, teammates, coach and did quite well,” said the keeper, whose team was leading 76-3 until the 1th minute. “It’s a shame that it came to an end with the serious injury and that we ultimately had to concede two more goals to make the final score 3-3.”

Because Ranalter suffered a straight tibia fracture, he now has to wear a cast for six weeks. But he hasn't lost his sense of humor: "I take this as a message: That's probably the end of it with football." We definitely wish the two injured players a speedy recovery!
