1st Amateur League: Successful cleaners and short-lived derby heroes

Steinhaus player Manuel Niederwanger was, at least for a moment, the celebrated derby hero. It was the 87th minute in his club's football kennel when he was finally allowed to take off his sweaty warm-up jersey and step onto the field in his sparkling uniform. The score was 1-1 at that point and the game was on a knife's edge. And then, just a few seconds after being substituted, a corner, a cross, a header onto the crossbar, the ball back into the field, Niederwanger where a celebrated derby hero has to stand - and finally a duster, so dry and beautiful, that the Steinhauser was quickly named the most popular cleaner of the weekend. Or the match winner of the Puster prestige duel – at least for a few seconds.

Niederwanger was still gasping for air after his celebration, when the unthinkable happened. Taufers desperately fired the ball forward one last time, by now the 90th minute was already underway, Steinhaus keeper Plankensteiner ran out of the goal, plucked the ball out of the air - and then noticed that he had come dangerously close to the edge of the penalty area. He dropped the leather like a hot potato and tried to chip it away. A move that Taufers striker Oberhollenzer saw through, shifted faster than Formula 1 driver Sebastian Vettl in front of a sharp right-hand bend and passed to his colleague Ebenkofler, who pushed the pill through a tangle of legs into the empty goal - the final score was 2-2 .

And once again a well-worn footballing wisdom came true: derbies write their own rules - whether you like it or not. For that, three euros in the phrase pig. Or in the washing machine. Would probably fit too.
