1st Amateur League: Peter Mair is the defense chief

Peter Mair and the central defender position? That goes together about as well as a cup of fresh milk and a man suffering from lactose intolerance. The exceptional footballer is usually less known for tough tackles or daring rescues in front of his own 16, but rather causes a sensation with fine dribbling or wonderful goals.

But necessity is also the mother of invention in Merano. And that's why coach Max Bertinato decided to take a special measure on Sunday against Sarntal: Since both central defenders were injured or suspended and substitutes were in short supply, Peter Mair received instructions from his coach shortly before the game that in the next 90 minutes to make defense chief. The attacker did his job confidently and at least the score was 0 at the end.

But it was still a bit unusual. “You always have to be 100% focused because (almost) every mistake is punished immediately. “In addition, you always quickly come under pressure in the center of defense,” said Mair, who smiled and drew a positive conclusion: “We kept a clean sheet and thus fulfilled our goal as a defender.” Only in attack, the striker’s creativity was somewhat lacking.
