1st Amateur League: Referee, he was there!

What do Geoff Hurst, Stefan Kießling and Julian Nussbaumer have in common? At first glance, not much. The first is a small English attacker, the second is a tall German striker and the third is a real Sarn defense bolt. Only upon closer inspection does it become clear that the three footballers have a lot in common: one of their goals (or non-goals) caused and continues to be a topic of conversation.

Hurst is the author of the legendary Wembley goal that won England the World Cup in 1966. In October 2013, Bayer Leverkusen professional Kießling headed the ball into the Hoffenheim side netting, which had a hole in that spot and allowed the ball to pass. And Nussbaumer was already in a frenzy of celebration with his comrades after his volley goal on Sunday against Gargazon when he was whistled back by the referee - "No, Mr. Nussbaumer, the ball didn't go into the goal, but past it." It goes without saying, that after this scene, the Sarn defense attorney and his colleagues were as perplexed as a grandpa who had just had his neck pouch stolen at the fair.

Everyone cheered - but suddenly there was a goal kick Sarntal keeper Martin Thaler, who watched the whole thing from behind, can remember the strange incident all too well: “We were 0-3 down, then, in the 55th minute, one of our players scored the ball into the middle after a corner. Defender Nussbaumer was standing in the penalty area, who volleyed the ball into the far corner and turned away with joy.”

So far so good. But then the disillusionment: “Suddenly everyone turned around and saw the referee calling for a goal kick.” Not really surprising, since the ball wasn’t in the net as usual, but out of bounds. But Nussbaumer knew, just like his teammates, that he had put the ball into the goal. As a result, the Sarnen footballers talked to the referee and even identified the culprit, i.e. the hole in the goal net. “Some opponents also said that the ball went through the net and out of bounds,” said Thaler. But the referee did not deviate from his decision. And Sarntal ended up losing 0:5.
