400.000 euros a week: Özil extends contract with Arsenal until 2021

London (SID) The top English football club FC Arsenal has now officially announced the contract extension of German world champion Mesut Özil. The 29-year-old midfielder has extended his contract in London for a further three and a half years until June 30, 2021. Team manager Arsene Wenger's club announced this on Thursday. After months of poker, Özil becomes the Gunners' highest-paid professional. "I signed the thing. Three more years with Arsenal," wrote the international on Twitter. "It was one of the most important decisions of my career, so I thought about it a lot. In the end I let my heart decide." According to reports, Özil will earn around 400.000 euros a week in the future, which is around 20,6 million euros per year and around half a million more than winter newcomer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is supposed to earn with the Londoners. His previous contract would have expired at the end of the season. The former Schalke and Bremer player had apparently made his stay in London dependent on the signing of former Dortmund striker Aubameyang. Özil had recently called for reinforcements. Arsenal also signed Henrich Mkhitaryan in exchange for Alexis Sanchez from Manchester United. The Italian record champions Juventus Turin and Man United are said to have been interested in Özil. United team manager Jose Mourinho is a fan of Özil, both of whom won the Spanish championship with Real Madrid in 2012. Mourinho had described the German international as “unique”: “The best number ten in the world.” Özil moved from Real to Arsenal in 2013 for the then German record sum of 50 million euros. There he won the FA Cup three times and has since provided the most assists and created the most chances in the Premier League. Internationally, however, he was not always able to meet the high expectations.
