71-year-old referee knocked down by player

The referee was attacked and knocked down on Sunday during the encounter between TuS Herscheid and TSKV Altena when the score was 5:1 by a guest player to whom he had shown a yellow card. The referee briefly lost consciousness and had to be treated in hospital.

“Zero tolerance! The Presidium and the entire FLVW are shocked by this brutal outbreak of violence,” said President Gundolf Walaschewski on Thursday: “At no point in the season can attacks on referees be explained or even excused. The fact that such a bad incident occurred on the first day of the match makes us even more stunned.” The encounter was canceled after the attack in the 86th minute.

The Turkish Sports and Cultural Association (TSKV) Altena has already “had a negative impact with similar incidents” in the past and must expect drastic penalties, the association said. “According to current knowledge, the player is not a footballer with a migrant background.” Walaschewski emphasized that the origin of the perpetrator should not play a role. “But due to the increasing discriminatory comments online, it is important for us to make this clear in this case,” he said.

The TSKV announced that it would “discuss the incident in detail and take the necessary measures.”
