Football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo moved to Saudi Arabia in the winter.

Off to the desert

Cristiano Ronaldo's signing in Saudi Arabia followed a familiar pattern, as our columnist Sigi Heinrich notes. Older players once again sense the trail of money and are not afraid to accept sporting relegations. For the Saudis, however, the deal with Ronaldo is only part of a gigantic project to gain recognition through sport and distract from their autocratic system.

It's pointless and somehow becoming debilitatingly boring to point out that CR7 didn't sign with Al-Nassr FC because he liked playing in the sandbox as a kid on his island of Madeira. It's the petro-dollars that lured him and all Statements that suggest that he is looking for a new adventure or that he is even done with Europe are simply the usual chatter.
