Relegation is becoming more and more realistic: weak HSV is defeated by Leverkusen

Hamburg (SID) Hamburger SV's first relegation from the Bundesliga is becoming increasingly apparent. On the 23rd matchday, coach Bernd Hollerbach's team, now without a win in ten games, suffered a 1:2 (0:1) defeat against Bayer Leverkusen and, as penultimate, is already six points behind the relegation place. The Hanseatic team's performance was not ready for the Bundesliga for long stretches. Bayer, on the other hand, moved up to second place, at least for the time being. Before the visitors' opening goal, defender Douglas Santos blacked out and lost the ball in the penalty area to Bayer's shooting star Leon Bailey, who skilfully let HSV keeper Christian Mathenia out and scored to take the lead (40th). Shortly after the substitution, Kai Havertz made it 2-0 for Leverkusen (50th). Andre Hahn's follow-up goal (71') gave the home side hope of at least one point again, but this remained unfulfilled. In view of the serious sporting imbalance, the eagerly awaited general meeting of HSV eV on Sunday with the duel between HSV President Jens Meier and challenger Bernd Hoffmann is likely to be quite uncomfortable. The results are devastating. HSV against Leverkusen - the duel has often represented extremely aggressive encounters in recent seasons. The guests traveled to the Elbe with appropriate respect. And HSV - with storm jewel Jann-Fiete Arp in the starting line-up for the first time since Hollerbach took office - was by no means looking for a football treat. In defense, the hosts also used rustic means to counter the talented Werkself. Wendell felt the hardship early on. After a foul by Mergim Mavraj, the Brazilian had to be substituted in the 15th minute of the game. Bayer were clearly the stronger team, but only had their first dangerous chance in the 26th minute when Charles Aranguiz hit the outside post with a header. HSV was unable to play constructively in the first half. The fans saw Arp's failed finish as a bit of encouragement (32'). But after that the hosts collapsed at times. After the break, Hollerbach switched from a three-man defense to a four-man defense and brought in another offensive force in the form of former national player Hahn and later Bobby Wood for Arp (54th). Initially, however, there was still no recipe for outplaying the much more stable Leverkusen team. But after Hahn's goal, HSV suddenly fought like crazy and caused Leverkusen to falter once again. Ultimately, however, the hosts' efforts to secure a draw were unsuccessful.
