Australia: Video evidence error decides championship

Although three players were offside before the only goal by Kosta Barbarouses (9th) in the final between Newcastle Jets and Melbourne Victory, referee Jarred Gillett declared the goal valid after a review by the video assistant. Melbourne won the final 1-0 (1-0) and secured its fourth A-League title.

As the national football association announced on Sunday, technical failure was the reason for the referee's wrong decision. “Our investigations have shown that due to a technical error, the video assistant did not have the necessary camera settings to recognize the offside position,” the association said in a statement.

Accordingly, the software of the technical service provider Hawkeye, which is supposed to provide the referee with the game images for checking within a very short time, failed. When the necessary camera angles were finally available, the game had already continued and the goal was declared valid.

“We are very disappointed due to the technical error. “We understand the frustration of the Newcastle Jets, their supporters and all other football fans,” said Australian league boss Greg O’Rourke.

The video assistant will also be used at the World Cup in Russia (June 14 to July 15, 2018). In Germany, the 18 Bundesliga clubs agreed in March to permanently use the “VAR” (Video Assistant Referee).
