Soon only 60 minutes left? FIFA discusses controversial rules

Be it video evidence or handball, goal line technology or offside – there have always been drastic rule changes in the world of football. Some were accepted straight away, others had to earn their right to exist and are still hotly debated today. Now the world association wants to usher in another revolution in football and is testing five new rules as part of a youth tournament that could later find a place in professional football.

The youth teams of PSV Eindhoven, AZ Alkmaar, RB Leipzig and Club Brugge are competing in the “Futur of Football Cup”. Perhaps the biggest change that will be implemented as a result of the tournament concerns the playing time. In order to appeal to younger people, FIFA would like to reduce the regular playing time from 90 minutes to a total of 60 minutes (2 x 30 minutes). In addition, another change is to stop the time whenever the game is interrupted. This is intended to prevent delaying game elements such as the time game. With the current regulation, an average of only around 57 minutes of pure playing time remains due to the time game. Dribbling on a corner kick Another big change could affect the execution of set pieces. For example, throw-ins should be replaced by bullet holes. You should even be able to take corner kicks by dribbling alone; a second player is no longer necessary to restart the game.

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the possible substitutions were increased from three to five players. To what extent FIFA wants to test (let alone apply) the proposed changes in professional football remains to be seen. As in previous innovations in football, FIFA is trying to open itself primarily to the American market. Examples of this include the introduction of net playing time or unlimited substitutions. In any case, the reports about this are already causing a lot of uproar on social media.
