Supervisor dies at regional tournament: South Tyrol withdraws

Many active and former footballers, coaches and officials in South Tyrol and beyond will have sad memories of this Wednesday morning. It is the morning after Elmar Hochkofler's death.

The team manager from Haslach traveled with the state selection teams to Abruzzo, where the junior team was currently in action at the regional tournament. He was already feeling slightly unwell on Tuesday evening and his condition worsened dramatically during the night at the hotel in Pineto. The team doctors and later the paramedics who were called could no longer do anything. Elmar Hochkofler died at the age of 66. Sometimes no further details are known about the cause of death.

In the morning, the junior players, among whom the sports-loving pensioner was extremely popular, were informed about the tragic events. The quarter-final game against Abruzzo planned for today has been canceled and the team is heading home early.

“Lost a true friend” The shock among the South Tyrolean delegation in central Italy is deep. Paul Georg Tappeiner, the president of the national football association, struggles for words in his statement: “This tragedy has affected us deeply. We have lost a wonderful person, a true friend. All our condolences go out to his family. Together we decided not to continue playing the tournament. Values, ideals, sharing grief and respect for the deceased led us to make this right and necessary decision.”
