Bolt begins his football adventure in Australia

"I always do my best and I'm going to show the world what I've got," the Jamaican said as he greeted scores of reporters after landing at Sydney Airport on Saturday with a Central Coast Mariners scarf around his neck was taken.

The 31-year-old will take part in the first division team's training Down Under for an indefinite period of time in order to pursue a hoped-for career as a professional footballer. “This is real,” said Bolt when asked whether the project wasn’t just a PR stunt: “I’m grateful to the Mariners for giving me this opportunity and I’m happy to now be able to call Australia my home.”

For the club from Gosford, 75 km north of Sydney, the A-League season begins at the end of October. The Mariners club boss had already announced that Bolt would not enjoy any special rights. “He wants it that way too. It's about his path in football. He’s here for the right reasons,” Shaun Mielekamp said.

However, due to the expected crowds of fans, the units will be moved to a larger training site and more security forces have been ordered. The eight-time Olympic champion Bolt caused a stir with a PR-effective training session with the Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund in March and practiced for a week with the Norwegian first division club Strömsgodset IF in June.

However, Bolt does not yet have a longer commitment like the one planned in New South Wales. Bolt ended his athletics career last year.
