Bomber Ivan Germano: “Our defense has to get better”

Ivan Germano is a footballer who doesn't make much of a fuss about himself and his goals. He lets actions speak for themselves. In his case, goals - seven of which he has scored in as many games in the national league so far. Anyone who only knows his name from the newspaper and sees Ivan Germano on the soccer field, how he circles around the opponents with the "heavy" number 10 and then scores goals like on an assembly line, will be reminded of the Argentine ball wizards. But Ivan Germano is a true South Tyrolean, 25 years old and comes from Barbian.

Ivan Germano, you have already played for several clubs. How did you come to SG Schlern? I had many offers in the summer, but in the end I decided on SG Schlern. I am very happy about this decision. After a long time in Mühlbach, I was looking for a new challenge.

Seven games in seven games - it didn't take you long to find your way around Schlern...

I'm very happy, but the bottom line is that my goals are nothing more than a necessity in order to achieve our goal of staying in the league. I play with a great team, everyone gives more than 100 percent.

You grew up playing football at Brixen, one of the most renowned youth departments in South Tyrol. Wouldn't your place be with a team in the top league? I went through all the youth departments in Brixen and also played in the first team for three years. It helped me a lot that I was able to work with such great trainers. Ultimately, I wanted to try something new. I went to Stegen, then I played in Mühlbach for five years and now I'm at Schlern. The Oberliga is certainly a great championship, but I only think about the present.

Wherever Schlern plays, there is entertainment - thanks to the best attack in the league. Where does your team still have room for improvement? We definitely need to improve defensively. We conceded 22 goals (worst figure of all regional league clubs, editor's note). We attack a lot, maybe too much (laughs), but ultimately we have to find a better balance.

Which opposing team in the national league has impressed you the most so far? Definitely St. Paul's. The team is technically and physically very strong. Virtus Don Bosco is also a great team, but I think St. Pauls has something more.

They have long been the idol of fans on the high plateau. What do you promise your followers?

That we will fight like lions to stay in the league until the end. The road there is long, but we will give it our all.

With one goal per game from Ivan Germano, this goal should soon be achieved... I score the goals because my teammates support me so well. Ivan Germano doesn't count, only Schlern counts on the pitch.

Two seasons ago you scored 23 goals with Mühlbach. You already have this record in mind, right? Who knows. I actually always scored in double figures. But I'm not one to play any math games. I just think about how I can help my team. You journalists have to do the math, not me (laughs).
