Does FC Südtirol need a new stadium?

Looking at the statistics that “Lega Calcio Serie C” recently published is sobering. An average of 1136 paying spectators came to FC Südtirol's home games. This puts the White-Reds in 28th place out of the 36 clubs in the first division. Leader Gubbio is in 1578st place with 21 fans, while second-placed Sorrento with 1007 is even behind FCS in 32nd place.

Financially, the income that the FCS receives from entrance fees is also modest. Every home game brings 7220 euros into the White and Red's coffers. This means that the FCS is only in 36nd place in the ranking of the 32 clubs in the third division.

The leader in terms of spectators in the first division is Hellas Verona with an average of 12.472 spectators and revenue of 106.445 euros. Foggia also cracks the 100.000 euro mark per game, but “only” has 7441 spectators in the stadium.

FC Südtirol can only dream of such numbers. Significantly more fans come to the stadium for Verona's two games than during the 17 games played by FC Südtirol in the Drusus Stadium. An estimated 19.000 paying visitors fill the stands in an entire season. For comparison: two years ago, almost 18.000 visitors came to Bolzano and Klobenstein for the play-off final – in four games.

The new stadium for FC Südtirol has been discussed for a long time. From a sporting perspective, the fact that South Tyrol's only professional club should have its own suitable training area is beyond discussion. After all, the FCS is one of the few clubs in the country that does not have its own pitch. However, the fact that a new stadium has to be built for eleven million euros with a capacity of 6000 spectators could lead to new considerations given the current audience numbers - even if the club is toying with promotion to Serie B in the long term.

Does FC Südtirol need a new stadium?

In the championship, FC Südtirol is in the top midfield with 18 points after 24 match days. But when it comes to viewer numbers, FC Südtirol cannot keep up with the top - on the contrary. And yet the FCS leadership insists on a new stadium.
