Danny Fäckl’s farewell to Brixen: “It was a fantastic time”

Danny Fäckl has been lacing up his soccer kicks for Brixen since he was five years old. In the 1998/99 season, when the Domstädter were still playing in the regional league, he made his debut in the first team at the tender age of 15. Since then, the dynamic and uncompromising defensive man has played a further 438 games - all for his team from Brixen. Now Fäckl saw the time as ripe to scale back something. In the SportNews interview, the 34-year-old talks about...

... the feeling he had after the final whistle on Sunday. That was a bit strange. Even before the game, I was surprised when my teammates gave me a jersey with the number two and my name on it. Afterwards there was also an award, I have to say that it was all very touching. Of course I would have liked to win my last game (St. Georgen beat Brixen 2-0, editor's note), but the finish in front of such a backdrop was still outstanding. It was really a fantastic time in Brixen.

... the decision to cut back in the future. We trained four times a week this year and played on Sundays - so as time goes on it becomes more and more difficult to get everything under one roof. I started thinking about it in the second half of the season and finally decided to scale back a bit. But I won't turn my back on football completely, physically I still feel good and will therefore continue playing in the lower leagues.

... the highlights of his career in Brixen. Two events come to mind now. In the 2007/08 league season we finished second and therefore played in the promotion games. And then of course I would mention winning the Europeada 2012. These were two truly unforgettable experiences.

... his long loyalty to the club for Brixen. I have played for Brixen since I was five years old. Over time, I kept getting offers from other clubs, but I never saw a reason to change. There is a great environment in Brixen, the club is top notch. This year, however, I realized that five football times a week was simply too much - and so with a heavy heart I decided to take a new path.

He is a native of Brixen and was one of the great figureheads of the Eisacktaler region for years. Now Danny Fäckl wants to slow down a bit - and therefore played his last game for SSV Brixen on Sunday against St. Georgen.
