The miracle of Vercelli doesn't happen: FCS misses promotion

Pro Vercelli was able to play the second leg of the final with the best possible team. Defender Cosenza was in the starting line-up despite a fever. Manuel Scavone from Bolzano also returned there after serving his suspension. At the FCS, Vassallo was given preference over Turchetta on offense. Branca returned to his regular position in central midfield.

The home team started like fire fighters and got their first chance through Scavone. However, his header posed no threat to FCS goalie Facchin. As the game continued, however, the white-reds found their line and felt their way in front of the opponent's goal. Pederzoli and Minesso tried long shots, but these were unsuccessful, as was a shot from Greco on the other side. In the 16th minute of the game, Corazza silenced the 4.000 spectators in the Piola Stadium: The FCS top scorer pushed a precise Pederzoli free kick over the line to make it 1-0 - much to the delight of the almost 100 South Tyrolean fans who had traveled with him. Pro Vercelli seemed visibly shaken by the goal. The only response was a harmless header from Cosenza. FC Südtirol was completely different: after a blocked shot from Minesso, Fink tried from the edge of the penalty area. His shot went just wide of the goal.

FCS caught cold

Immediately after the restart, however, the cold shower came for the FCS: In a commotion in the guests' five-meter area, Fabiano kept his perspective and scored with a backheel trick to make it 1-1. But that wasn't enough, because immediately afterwards Facchin scratched Scavone's header off the line. FC Südtirol now came under constant fire. Coach Rastelli's team was only slowly able to free themselves from their grip. In the 64th minute, Bassoli was denied by goalkeeper Russo after a corner, who fended off the ball with a brilliant save. Just at that moment, when the FCS players were gradually gaining the upper hand, they had to accept the next setback. Branca dropped in the penalty area and was sent off with a second yellow card. After that the game became more and more heated. FC Südtirol tried hard, but didn't manage to put their opponents under long-term pressure. As a result, there were no significant chances to score. Even the substitutions of Tagliani, Turchetta and Cocuzza could not significantly revive the FCS game. With a lot of skill, Pro Vercelli brought the score to 1:1 over time.

The Piedmontese are returning to the second highest division just twelve months after being relegated from Serie B. The FCS has to console itself with the fact that it achieved the best result of a South Tyrolean club in professional football this season. However, the longed-for jump out of the Lega Pro did not materialize.

FC Südtirol threw everything into the second leg of the playoff final against Pro Vercelli, but fell into a valley of tears at the end of the 90 minutes. The 1-1 draw at the Silvio Piola Stadium was not enough to make up for the first leg defeat and gain promotion to Serie B.
