Davide Zomer ends season with Meran: “The only thing missing is the details”

After his season at Feralpisalò, Davide Zomer is caught up in the past. Two years ago he left FC Südtirol, which fell into the fourth division at the time. The afternoon of June 5, 2011 has still not been forgotten: Back then, Ravenna secured relegation with a goal in the 95th minute of the game. The penalty was preceded by an inexplicable misfire by Zomer: When he had the ball in his hand and everything was just waiting for the final whistle, he attacked an opponent and pushed him to the ground. The referee, who had observed the situation, showed the Rovereto goalkeeper a red card and awarded a penalty. Defender Pietro Cascone had to go between the posts for him. He had no chance at Chianese's following penalty. After this curiosity, FC Südtirol's relegation was decided in the last minute of the game. Zomer's adventure with the Bolzano club was over.

Last season he appeared seven times with Feralpisalò. In the summer of 2012, he was contacted by many clubs, but there were no concrete offers. Despite his impressive resume, Zomer is currently unemployed. “I’m a full-time dad. I also had contact with other teams, but they were far away from my home and family,” said the goalie from Rovereto.

Zomer's career

The goalkeeper from Trentino played in the FC Südtirol jersey for two seasons (2009 and 2010). In these two years he guarded the White-Reds' goal 70 times, having to reach behind him 68 times. Eleven years previously, he had already played 13 times for the FCS when they were still playing in the C2 series. Zomer also gained experience in Serie B, where he appeared 24 times with Verona, Treviso and Ascoli. 141, on the other hand, is the number of his appearances in the Lega Pro (57 in the 1st Division, 84 in the 2nd Division). “At the beginning of the season I really missed playing football, but over time it has gotten better. I knew since March 2011 that they were going to restructure the budget in Salò, so I was without a team this year. “The crisis is getting worse, there’s no denying that,” explains Zomer.

The call from Merano

The goalkeeper from Rovereto was called by Merano coach Massimo Bertinato. “He sounded very correct and friendly. He told me that they are having problems with their goalkeeper, who is currently injured. I haven't signed anything yet, but it's just a question of details: I will be available to them and I'm happy to end my season in Merano. I feel like training and even though I don't know the environment, I'm sure I've made the right decision. The national league is the only category that was still missing for me. Maybe it was fate,” concludes Zomer happily.

After a season without a team, the 35-year-old goalkeeper from Rovereto has decided to end the current year in the national league with Merano. “I was just missing this category and I feel like training. Coach Bertinato persuaded me and we will decide on the change shortly.”
