FC Südtirol celebrates a sensational victory in Lecce

What a matchday for FC Südtirol! Hannes Kiem and Co. made the impossible possible in the away game in Lecce and defeated the league leaders, who were full of top-class players. With this surprise coup, the FCS has finally established itself in the top third of the table. With 25 points, the Vecchi team now occupies third place in the table, four points behind leaders Lecce.

The encounter in the “Via del Mar” stadium was characterized by tough duels and emotionally charged scenes. Already in the first half, the home team's coach Lerda and the team doctor were sent to the stands. The referee also handed out five yellow cards and one expulsion. Lecce center forward Salvatore Foti was shown a straight red card in the 55th minute after an extremely hard action and had to take a shower early.

Up to this point, both teams had hardly been able to create any chances to score. Only Bertoni caused excitement with a nice move in the 9th minute, but his shot was saved by Benassi. On the other side, FCS goalie Marconi was hardly challenged with mostly harmless long shots. However, after Foti was excluded, things started to change. First Lecce pushed for the opening goal with Chiricò and Pià, then Thiam scored from an offside position to make it 1-0 for FC Südtirol. However, the goal was rightly not given. In the final phase, the guests managed to tame the attack attempts of former Serie A footballers such as Giacomazzi, Jeda and Pià and work their way deep into the opponent's half. This was rewarded with substitute Riccardo Pasi's late winning goal. He took a shot from around 25 meters away from the goal and hit it straight into the corner of the cross. Lecce immediately counterattacked, but a well-placed long shot from Pià was defused by Marcone. In stoppage time, the FCS could have increased the lead to 2-0, but Branca's final attempt hit the post. A few seconds later the game was over and the cheering among the guests knew no bounds.
