The black month of FC Südtirol

Before the season, the euphoria surrounding FC Südtirol was greater than it had been for a long time. The narrowly missed promotion to Serie B in the previous season should be forgotten with a highly traded squad. In addition, the “South Tyrolean path” was intended to attract spectators back to the Drusus Stadium. That's the plan. The reality is sometimes different: At the last home game last Friday, 400 paying spectators - fewer than ever this season - saw the 1-1 draw against Albinoleffe and thus the fifth game without a win for Kiem and his teammates.

Blinded by the Alessandria game

At the end of September, FC Südtirol was still close to the top of the table after a 2-0 win against Pro Patria. This was followed by a 2-2 draw in the difficult away match in Alessandria. After this game there was a lot of praise for the FCS. Not because of the result, but rather because of the performance shown, which was hailed as the best of the season. A lot of things were concealed that would become apparent in the following weeks.

The good performance in Piedmont was followed by the inexplicably weak performance in the 1:2 at home against Renate. A week later, the Rastelli team scored a flattering point at Real Vicenza, but the performance of the white and red remained worrying. The situation was similar at the next away game in Novara, which was lost 0-1. The FCS officials, especially coach Claudio Rastelli, found the scapegoat in the referee. This made it possible to at least partially retouch the ongoing downward trend.

Players and coaches have a responsibility

However, since last Friday there has been nothing to sugarcoat. FC Südtirol must act! If the players don't manage to turn things around in Salò on the next match day, the club's management will probably be forced to make a statement. In this case, the leave of absence of Rastelli, who sometimes seems unimaginative, seems unavoidable. But is this step enough to make the black month of October forgotten? In days like these, everyone at FC Südtirol has to question themselves, from the management level, the sports director to the players to the coach. Because one thing is clear: there is a wide gap between expectations and reality after almost a third of the season.
