DFB President Grindel wants to run for re-election in 2019

“You have to keep trying to get re-elected. That's what I'm going to do," said the 57-year-old in ZDF's current sports studio: "I would find it strange if I didn't want to work on the future project."

Meanwhile, Grindel did not want to take part in speculation as to whether the former national player and new European Championship organization boss Philipp Lahm could be his successor in the highest office at the DFB.

“It is clear that he will continue the role of being the face of the European Championship,” said Grindel when asked about Lahm’s ambitions: “I also understood him to mean that he wants to concentrate on this task first.”

Error in Özil case In dealing with the Mesut Özil case, Grindel once again admitted mistakes. “I always said that we should have defended Mesut more,” he said and announced that in the future he would “show a clear stance” in the event of racist hostilities against players and “stand up to individual players in individual cases”. The DFB's integration message must be communicated more clearly again. “It is important that we become even more sensitive at the grassroots level,” said Grindel. He could imagine installing an additional integration ambassador without a migration background.

In an interview with the Bild newspaper's football podcast, Grindel also repeated his criticism of Özil because of his failed discussion with national coach Joachim Löw. However, he “at no time” wanted to put pressure on him in this regard. “I just said that I know it from football: If you leave a team or change a club, you talk about it with your coach,” he said.
