The Europeada casts its shadow ahead

Although the Europeada and its basic principles have little in common with UEFA's large, glittering football stage, the group draw on Monday in the Salewa Tower was certainly reminiscent of the pompous gala two days earlier in Paris. However, the most important football nations on the continent were not present, but rather delegates and responsible persons from the European regions of language minorities. “With this tournament we want to build bridges and focus on minorities that are often neglected,” explains Bernhard Ziesch from the Federal Union of European Nationalities (FUEN).

The South Tyroleans and Ladins know their opponents

The Europeada is taking place for the third time. After 2008 with the Romansh people in Graubünden (Switzerland) and 2012 with the Lusatian Sorbs in Germany, South Tyrol now follows. The German minority in Italy fought for the European Championship title in the Sorbian country and thus the right to host the European Championship for Minorities from June 18th to 26th. “This will be a great event,” promises OC boss Siegfried Stocker. He adds: “We deliberately chose the venues in the Puster and Val Badia in order to include both the German and Ladin language minorities.”

30 teams, 8 venues

The highlight of the performance in Bolzano on Monday was the eagerly awaited group draw. The Ladins in Circle A were assigned the Crimean Tatars, the Turks in Western Thrace and the Hungarians in Romania. Meanwhile, the South Tyrolean team will face the Danes in North Frisia, the Manx and the Oberschliesen selection in Group E.

The games in the six groups will be played in St. Martin in Thurn, St. Vigil in Enneberg, Pfalzen, Mühlwald, Sand in Taufers, St. Johann im Ahrntal, Olang and Niederdorf. In addition to the 24 men's teams, there will also be six women's teams in action in these locations. For the first time, a women's tournament will also be held at the Europeada. In addition to the hosts from South Tyrol and Ladinia, the Occitanians, Lusatian Sorbs, Russian-Germans and Rhaeto-Roman women are also at the start. They will all ensure international football flair in South Tyrol from June 18th to 26th, 2016 - at the same time as the European Championships in France.
