The coaching question at FC Südtirol, Virtus Bozen & Co.

The hottest iron is FC Südtirol. Coach Paolo Zanetti is second there two successful seasons possibly before the farewell, even if the club and coach do not want to comment on it yet. The 36-year-old has led the White Reds into the playoffs twice in a row and shaped them into a top team in Serie C. That arouses desire. Last year it was not clear for a long time whether Zanetti would stay in Bolzano. Now this question arises again.

Is Zanetti returning home? It is clear that the ex-professional still has one year left on his contract and a transfer fee would have to be paid if he left. It is also clear that he has offers from other clubs - at least from Serie C. However, FCS President Walter Baumgartner did not want to comment on water level reports. What has been leaked is that Zanetti is particularly strongly associated with LR Vicenza. Zanetti has never made a secret of the fact that he is a fan of the traditional club in his hometown - which does not mean that he has to become a coach there. But now he apparently has the chance to coach the club he loves. Whether he is doing himself a favor by taking over a turbulent club into which he would put all his heart and soul in addition to professional work is another question.

Should Zanetti say goodbye to FC Südtirol, a possible successor would already be ready. Michele Marcolini, 43 years old and from Savona, already watched the playoff match against Sambenedettese from the stands at the Drusus Stadium. Marcolini was already an issue at FC Südtirol in the summer of 2017, but at that time the then sports director Aladino Valoti decided in favor of Zanetti. Another advantage of Marcolini: He knows Paolo Bravo, Valoti's successor, very well from their time together at Santarcangelo. What happens at Virtus Bozen? The coaching situation at the second capital city club is no less uncertain than at FC Südtirol. Virtus coach Alfredo Sebastiani has numerous offers - including from professional football. The 53-year-old from L'Aquila is doing an excellent job for the fourth division club. Sebastiani, who has long since put down roots in South Tyrol, doesn't want to train too far away from Bolzano. This limits the possibilities and increases the chances for Virtus Bozen. The fact that Sebastiani should return to FC Südtirol is nothing more than a rumor and probably not an issue internally.
