Former FCS coaches become promotion heroes

It wasn't FC Südtirol's year, no question about it. Twelfth place at the end of the season was far from what we had actually planned. Tick it off and forget it, that's the motto of the white and reds. However, three former employees of the club will remember the 2016/17 season for a long time.

One of them, viz Marco Baroni (2005/06 coach at FCS), achieved something historic on Thursday evening. With Benevento Calcio he was promoted to Serie A for the first time. The 53-year-old from Florence took over the position in Campania last summer and helped the club move straight from the Lega Pro to the top division. After Spezia and Perugia were defeated in the playoffs and the first leg of the final against Carpi ended goalless, Benevento completed their league jump with a 1-0 win in front of their home crowd.

You could also celebrate as a newcomer Attilio Tesser (from 2001 to 2003 at the FCS), who made a brilliant comeback with Cremonese in the Lega-Pro-Circle A and ultimately overtook the leader Alessandria. The former first division professional finally rose to Serie B as champions with the traditional club.

The same feat was achieved Giovanni Stroppa (2011/12 and 2015/16 in Bolzano) with Foggia in the parallel group. The ex-Milan player led the southern Italians to win the title and thus back into the second division.

These three coaches could soon be followed by a fourth with an FCS past: Bruno Tedino (2003/04 with the White-Reds) is in the playoff semi-finals with Pordenone in the Lega Pro. However, Scavone's Parma will be a really tough opponent there on Tuesday.
