A newcomer is shaking up the top league: the high-flying St. Pauls

With five wins in a row, last year's national league champions around top scorer Jonas Clementi have suddenly become the first pursuers of leaders St. Georgen. But coach Stefan Gasser's team hasn't had enough yet. We spoke to the coach of the Oberliga high flyers.

9 games, 22 points, 2nd place – would you have dreamed of such a start before the season? Of course not. I have to admit, we often had the necessary luck on our side in the first few games. In the first game against Brixen (3:1, editor's note) it could have easily turned out differently, but the episodes and striker Jonas Clementi gave us the opportunity to go into the following games more calmly.

What do you see as the reasons for the surge in the first phase of the season? I think the last few years have made us very strong as a team and group. The team always approaches the games ambitious and determined. To be fair, we had a bit of luck on our side in several situations.

How big a role does promotion euphoria play? Euphoria can be good, but often dangerous. I am the coach of a team that is very focused and self-confident because of the last championship.

5 out of 7 games were won by one goal difference. What do you think that says? I think that says a lot. 1-0 means that games like this could easily have ended very differently, but it also shows that the entire team was united and did self-sacrificing defensive work.

The goal for the season, i.e. staying in the league, should now only be a formality. To what extent have St. Pauls' goals changed now? I never collected points to avoid relegation. The goal was always to give the team a structure that would give them the opportunity to stay in this league long-term in the future.
