A year without Maradona: homages and accusations on the first anniversary of his death

The entire country plunged into a collective depression. In the middle of the peak phase of the corona pandemic, tens of thousands of people walked past his coffin in the Casa Rosada government palace. All of Argentina was in mourning.

A year later, the golden boy, as fans call him, is remembered with homages, television series and monuments. The South American football association CONMEBOL is planning a tribute to Maradona's death on Thursday in Montevideo, where the Copa Libertadores final will take place two days later. A year after his death, a whole series of new series, books and podcasts are dedicated to the life of the exceptional footballer. “Maradona: Sueño bendito” can be seen on the streaming service Amazon Prime, and there is a podcast about the last days of “El Diez” on Spotify. In Argentina there is even a comic biography on the anniversary of his death. “Maradona is more popular than Jesus and the Beatles,” claims illustrator Miguel Repiso. Allegations against Diego Maradona However, the homage to the most famous Argentine is overshadowed by new allegations that were made in the course of investigations against former confidants of the football star. Several men in his circle are being investigated for human trafficking because they brought Maradona's then underage lover from Cuba to Argentina without her parents' consent.

In an interview with the news portal Infobae, Mavys Álvarez accused Maradona of raping her, beating her, forcing her to have a breast enlargement and forcing her to take drugs. “In the beginning he made me happy, but then there came a point when that was no longer the case,” said the now 37-year-old. “I feared for my life.” Investigator: Maradona could still be alive In addition, Maradona's daughters, former companions and his former lawyer Matías Morla repeatedly accuse each other of who was responsible for the early death. And the public prosecutor's office is now accusing Maradona's personal doctor Leopoldo Luque, psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov and several nurses of manslaughter.
