Fabio Bertoldi and professional football: A flirtation with an open end

Bertoldi made a strong impression during training in Thailand and quickly convinced those responsible at the Air Force Central FC club of his skills. After three days with the Thai second division team, the club's management presented him with a contract ready to be signed - but Bertoldi refused. The main reason for this was the short duration of the contract: it would have expired at the end of the season (in Thailand the championship ends at the end of October, editor's note) and would therefore only have been valid for a few months.

“However, involvement in Asia is not yet off the table,” says the consultant who arranged the Bertoldi deal in Thailand. The Thai club officials will continue to follow Bertoldi's sporting career in the coming months and want to meet with him and his agent again in January 2018 - before the start of the next championship. “If there is a contract that meets Fabio’s ideas, it is quite possible that he will sign a deal. In any case, Fabio didn’t have a bad time in Thailand,” said the advisor.

Good players, good level If an agreement is actually reached between Bertoldi and Air Force Central FC in January, the Salurner could possibly even play in the highest league in the country: Air Force is in second place in the table after 20 of 34 match days and is therefore well on its way towards the Premier League. The top three in the ranking in Thailand are eligible for promotion.

According to the consultant, whether Air Force plays in the first or second league next year does not have too much influence on another offer. Bertoldi himself was even surprised at the relatively high level of the second highest Thai league. “The football is certainly different than in Italy, but the players are at a high level technically and athletically. Fabio had to put in a lot of effort, also because of the special climatic conditions,” emphasizes his agent. The league only has some catching up to do in the tactical area. By engaging foreign coaches and players, these deficiencies should also be remedied in the future.

Serie D or Oberliga: Bertoldi is spoiled for choice As for Bertoldi's future, it lies at home - at least until the end of the year. It is currently unclear which club the 29-year-old will play for in the next few months. Bertoldi is being discussed by several clubs, with the names Virtus Bozen, Trent and Levico in particular popping up frequently. However, an official agreement is still pending.

While Bertoldi's next footballing station has not yet been determined, one thing is certain: the chapter of professional football in Thailand is far from over for what is probably the best striker in the local amateur scene.
