Facebook inquiries & professional football: Bogdan Ungureanu's story

It all actually started with a friend request on Facebook. Two years ago, Bogdan Ungureanu was playing in the ninth English league when, thanks to his brother, who lived in South Tyrol, he met his Romanian work colleague. There was a spark between the two - so much so that after just a few months Ungureanu decided to leave the British cold and the tough football behind him and move his center of life to the tranquil Neumarkt in the south of South Tyrol.

Mihaela has been the Romanian's wife since May and they already have a child on the way. And things are also going well for the ex-professional in terms of football: After his former junior teammate and current Obermais player Andrei Shvarz got wind of Ungureanu's new place of residence via Facebook last summer, all it took was a quick coffee chat and a little something Work of persuasion to bring Bogdan to his own team on the Lahn on a trial basis. It quickly became clear that Ungureanu's profile was an ideal fit for coach Klotzner's physical game, which he underlined with 13 goals this season after his signing.

“There is a lack of money in Romania” But it's not just because of his reliable hit rate that Ungureanu is now one of the cornerstones of the team at Obermais. His experience is also worth its weight in gold for the Klotzner team. The 29-year-old has seen a lot of the football world in his life and has spent a large part of it in his native Romania, where he played in the first and second divisions. “As a footballer you have a difficult time in Romania. Clubs promise you money that you will never see. For example, a club once owed me 5000 euros - a lot of money if you have to make ends meet as a professional," explains Ungureanu.

So it's not very surprising that the Romanian decided two years ago to leave his homeland and seek his fortune in England. At the London club FC Romania, which played in the semi-professional ninth division, the striker was particularly impressed, not to say surprised, by the English team's physical style of play. But he wasn't really happy on the island - so it was a good thing that he came into contact with Mihaela, with South Tyrol, at exactly that time.

“I’ve never seen anything like this before” Today Ungureanu is completely satisfied with his decision to choose South Tyrol and Obermais. The storm tank, who works in a factory, is particularly fond of the “Curva Sud”, the FCO fan club. “I've never seen anything like this before. The fact that fans support someone so much in good times, but especially in bad times, is impressive,” explains the Romanian. He is currently in full preparatory training with the Blue and Whites - and wants to aim high again next season. By now his name is probably a little better known to most people.
