Flavio Toccoli and the miracle Bozner FC: “Achieved an incredible thing”

In fact, hardly anyone had bet on Bozner FC making such a breakthrough. Although the quality of the individual players, such as Bertoldi, Ceravolo, Watschinger and Co., is undisputed, they first needed a coach who was able to form a tight-knit unit out of these players and thereby leave the favored competition behind. Flavio Toccoli took office on March 7th last year when he took over as player-coach from Walter Zingerle, who was on leave. Almost 15 months later, his success story culminated in his protégés' triumphant 5-1 win against their worst opponents in the fight for the title, city rivals FC Neugries. “I still can’t believe it, especially when I think back to the start of the season when nobody really had us on their list,” says an overjoyed Toccoli.

The numbers speak volumes

With one match day to go, Bozner FC can already boast impressive statistics: 58 points from 29 games, the best attack (53 goals) and the best defense (23 goals conceded) in the entire league and only one home defeat (1:2 against Virtus on March 28th). October) are attributed to the League Croesus. “Our recipe for success is team spirit. That may sound simple, but we have actually managed to form a unit from young talent and players who have already played in higher leagues. The latter put themselves unconditionally at the service of the team. That impressed me the most,” explains Flavio Toccoli, or “Lupo” as his players call him. He cites the defeat against Natz as the turning point, “afterwards we picked ourselves up and achieved five wins in a row. So we knew we were capable of achieving great things.”

Past and future

In 2000, on a memorable afternoon in Mezzocorona, Toccoli was promoted to Serie C with FC Südtirol. It was an experience that has had a decisive impact to this day: “The promotion with the FCS is not comparable to that on Sunday with the Bozner FC. I had two extremely intense years under Giuseppe Sannino. He made us sweat blood for success. In retrospect, however, I am very grateful to him because he internalized the concepts of work and humility in me. I now try to pass on these virtues to my players.”

No squad shake-up

The former central defender already has clear ideas about the coming league season: “We will certainly stick to our concept and continue to rely on young, hungry players. This strategy has now become the trademark of Bozner FC. Although Simon Rossi will be leaving us for study reasons, we will keep the squad competitive with a few targeted reinforcements.”

In the coming season, Bozner FC will be the only top division team from the state capital. “It's a great honor for us, although I wouldn't have had any objections to a showdown with Bozen 96. Whatever the case, we can look forward to a memorable year in the regional football upper echelon.” There is probably nothing more to add at this point.
