The Portuguese, who has returned to Manchester United, is expected to receive an annual salary of $125 million (before taxes) in the current season. According to the study, 70 million of this is attributable to his salary and bonus payments at the top English club alone. The rest comes from sponsorship contracts.

The 36-year-old Ronaldo once again left Lionel Messi behind. The Argentinian (33), who now plays for Paris Saint-Germain - was ahead of the Forbes list last year with $126 million - now earns $110 million. In terms of salary alone, Messi is said to be ahead at 75 million.

The number three and four top earners are also PSG professionals. The Brazilian Neymar will earn $95 million, the Frenchman Kylian Mbappe will earn a comparatively “modest” $43 million. Andres Iniesta still appears in the top ten in seventh place. The 37-year-old Spaniard now plays for Vissel Kobe in Japan and his earnings are still estimated at $35 million.
