Football: Sarntal still sticks by his coach

The fact that football is tough has already been proven several times in South Tyrol in this young season. No matter whether in the professional business or in the amateur sector. In the league, coach Paul Pircher was fired after two rounds because he and St. Martin lost away to Naturns and at home to Tramin. FC Südtirol parted ways with Lorenzo D'Anna a little over two weeks ago because he scored a meager five points in five games.

Daniele Carion has a miserable record at ASC Sarntal in the 1st Amateur League, District A. Seven defeats and only one point from eight games have not cost the Sarner trainer his job (yet). They continue to rely on the coach who took over the relegated team in the summer.

“Carion works very well in training. He simply never had all the players available to him in the last few games. Some were missing due to injury, others went on vacation, others were sick or suspended. Our player base is very thin and every loss is very difficult to compensate for,” says Reinhard “Veto” Hofer, committee member at ASC Sarntal, looking for an explanation for the recent failures.

Of course there was discussion about the coach on the board. “A month and a half ago, a month ago. But the majority in the committee is still on his side. Like I said, he does his homework. But whether he can still reach the players after these many defeats is a different matter,” Hofer continues.

After a sensational state league year, the crash comes In the second half of the 2011/12 season, the Sarner team impressed with great football – and very strong results. The team coached by Ernst Eschgfeller scored a total of 44 points and took an excellent seventh place with only Sarner players and a local coaching team.

However, Sarntal was unable to confirm these results in the last sporting year and so the bitter transition to the 1st amateur league came. But they obviously didn't get there under the new coach Daniele Carion.

There were five defeats in a row at the start before there was a 2-2 draw against Mals on matchday six. Many experts thought that the turning point had now been achieved. But it was only a brief flash in the pan, as defeats six and seven followed quickly. The 1:2 at home against Auer last Sunday was particularly a bitter pill to swallow, because this club, like Sarner, is also fighting to stay in the league. And the next two cellar derbies are just around the corner. On Sunday we play away against Barbian, before the home game against Laas in ten days. It would be unimaginable if these two games were lost too.

Sarners don't bury their heads in the sand Nevertheless, Hofer is combative. "It is a doom-loop. If you lose a few times in a row, the players' self-confidence is gone. But we don't bury our heads in the sand. Almost all of the players are now available to the coach again, so we are expecting a change,” said Hofer. Julian Nussbaumer is also said to be celebrating a comeback. Hofer doesn't say that, but insiders report. The Sarner team, which had to cope with the departure of Bernd Saltuari to Bozner FC in the summer, would certainly gain in quality as a result.

Two other amateur teams are currently even more unsuccessful than Sarner. Mölten/Vöran in the 2nd amateur league, district A and Excelsior in the 3rd amateur league, group B have not yet scored any points at all. A small consolation for the people of Sarn, who have not yet given up faith in themselves.
