“Grexit not far away”: FIFA threatens Greek clubs with exclusion

Athens (SID) Greek football clubs are threatened with exclusion from European club competitions after numerous scandalous incidents in the national league. Herbert Hübel, who has been appointed head of an observer commission by the world association FIFA since July 2017, confirmed this on Wednesday. "Grexit, which seemed distant for a long time, is no longer impossible," said the Austrian: "Greek football is on the edge of a cliff." On Monday, the Greek government ordered the interruption of the domestic championship round after the latest incident in a long series of scandals. The top game between cup winners PAOK Saloniki and leaders AEK Athens was canceled the day before in the 90th minute after PAOK owner Ivan Savvidis ran onto the pitch with a gun on his belt. Also at the PAOK Stadium at the end of February, visiting coach Oscar Garcia from Olympiacos Piraeus was hit in the head by an object thrown from the audience. The game was scored 3-0 for Olympiacos, but a deduction of three points was later reversed. In response to the punishment initially imposed, angry PAOK fans stormed a TV studio and forced the presenter to read out a letter of protest. A month earlier, the government had also imposed an away ban on fans of the top clubs Olympiakos, PAOK, Panathinaikos and AEK Athens due to repeated acts of violence. In an unrelated match-fixing scandal in Greek football in 2011, 58 people were sentenced to prison terms of up to ten years in Athens a few days later.
