At 56 years old: Miura continues her career

“King Kazu” is not yet thinking about football retirement: Kazuyoshi Miura, who at 56 is considered the oldest professional footballer in the world, will continue to play paid football in the coming season.

The attacker will remain on loan at Portuguese UD Oliveirense for another season, the second division club announced. The deal with the well-known football oldie will generate a lot of attention for the club, but the impact on the sport is likely to be limited. In the second half of last season, Miura only made three short appearances for Oliveirense, two of which only lasted one minute each.

Miura began his career at the age of 15 in Brazil. In the four decades since, “King Kazu,” as he is known in the media, has also played in Italy, Croatia, Australia and his home country. As one of Japan's most successful national players, he scored 89 goals in 55 international matches.

Not nearly enough

Miura is officially under contract with Yokohama FC. The Yokohama ownership company has also been the majority owner of UD Oliveirense since last year. This circumstance may have contributed to the decision for Miura to stay there for another year.
