Confusion at Sporting: President apparently suspends 19 players

In a now-deleted Facebook post on Friday evening, President Bruno de Carvalho announced that he would suspend 19 of the team's players. This was preceded by the president's anger over what he saw as his team's poor performance in the defeat on Thursday evening in Madrid, which he subsequently criticized on his Facebook account. “Seeing such terrible mistakes from internationally experienced players increases our suffering,” he wrote there.

The team then also responded with a public statement. "On behalf of the team, we express our disgust at the public statements made by our president after yesterday's game in which we did not achieve the desired result," said the statement, which 19 players published on their social media channels. The president is now said to have suspended these same players, including stars such as goalkeeper Rui Patricio, captain William Carvalho and Fabio Coentrao.

Without these 19 players, coach Jorge Jesus would only have six players from the first team squad available for the league game against Pacos Ferreira on Sunday evening. Former Wolfsburg player Bas Dost, who does not have an official Facebook or Instagram account, would be the only remaining regular player. According to information from the newspaper A Bola, coach Jesus stands behind his players. The 63-year-old has no intention of competing against Pacos with a B team. If this is nevertheless the case, he would consider asking the club management for his immediate dismissal.

Last week, the president of the Greek record champions Olympiacos Piraeus took a similarly drastic measure. Evangelos Marinakis had ex-national player Marko Marin's team on leave until the end of the season due to a lack of success and imposed a fine of 400.000 euros.
