Interview with Luca Piazzi: “That was my time at FCS”

With Luca Piazzi, FC Südtirol was promoted to the third highest division in 2010, followed by seven turbulent years that ended with relegation in the current season. The sports director guided countless players to Bolzano, paved the way for some of them into higher leagues and led the club itself through ups and downs in the Lega Pro. The way he planned his squad was often controversial, but his work earned him great appreciation beyond the region. “ In these eight years I have learned a lot and matured. At the same time, I also think that I have built a sustainable scouting and support framework that did not exist in the club before.” At the same moment Piazzi clarifies: “ I'm not going because I have a better offer. The project at FCS was scheduled to run until 2018. It's a shame it wasn't seen through to the end, but maybe it's better for everyone this way."

What's the truth about the Inter rumor? In recent months there has been a lot of speculation about the future of the long-time FCS official. However, there has not yet been an agreement with the top Italian club Inter Milan. “These are all rumors. There was contact, that's true, but there is no prospect of a signature or a firm commitment. I’m still looking for an ambitious project in a higher league.”

What remains of the FCS era? At Inter, Piazzi would meet an old acquaintance, namely Stefano Vecchi, who took over as Pioli's successor as coach on Tuesday. “Vecchi is an excellent coach. With him, Inter have found an optimal interim solution until the end of the season. In addition to Vecchi, other really good trainers also worked in Bolzano. I’m still in touch with some of them, like Sormani or Stroppa.” However, Piazzi has not only had several coaches under his wing, but has also seen countless players come and go. He remembers: “Many of them made the jump to higher leagues. I'm thinking of Thiam or El Kaddouri, who have made impressive developments. But there are also several talented players in the current squad who can be recommended for higher tasks. One example is Fabian Tait. He came to us as a Serie D player, changed positions several times and finally matured into a complete player. That also fills a sports director with a lot of pride.”

Are Valoti and Colombo the right choice? With Aladino Valoti, a successor for Piazzi seems to have already been found at FC Südtirol. The only thing missing from coach Alberto Colombo is the contract signature. What judgment does the Trentino native make about this choice of personnel? “I got to know Veloti as a very serious person, but I find it difficult to assess his work. If Colombo stays, it would be a stroke of luck for the club. He knows exactly what he wants, demands a clear line and good organization. If the club leadership offers him the right conditions, he will take the team further forward. In any case, I will continue to closely follow the development of FC Südtirol in the future - no matter where and in what role I will work in the future," concluded the outgoing sports director.

FC Südtirol has invited people to a press conference on Thursday. It will be Luca Piazzi's last official appearance as sports director and possibly the occasion to present his successor. After eight years, the era of the club official from the Eisacktal is over. Here Piazzi takes stock.
