Coppa Italia: The FCS has to give up

The cup competition organized by Lega Serie A has undergone a reform. So only 4 third division teams received a cup ticket. These were the 4 best-placed non-promoters from the last Serie C season (including FC Südtirol). They fought with the third division champions to get into the main field, which includes the 20 Serie A and the remaining 16 Serie B teams.

But for the FCS, this year's Coppa Italia is already history. The white-reds lost 0-1 on new coach Ivan Javorcic's debut at Perugia, which was crowned FCS champions last season and now plays in Serie B. A new addition to the starting line-up On Sunday, FC Südtirol played in a 4-3-2-1 system that former coach Stefano Vecchi had already established in the second half of the season. Of the newcomers, only Filippo De Col was in the starting line-up. The 27-year-old came to FCS from Virtus Entella in the summer and is expected to make Hamza El Kaouakibi forget on the right side of defense. About the game: Perugia was the slightly superior team in the first half. The FCS only became dangerous in the 1th minute when Nermin Karic prevailed and passed on Marco Beccaro. However, his graduation passed. Goal conceded after the restart 2 minutes after the restart, the home team took the lead through Mirko Carretta: The center forward stood in the right place after a cross and headed the ball into the net. The FCS then became stronger - also because Davide Voltan gave the game more creativity after his substitution. In the 61st minute, offensive midfielder Raphael Odogwu was sent on his way. He cleverly got through, but “only” hit the left post when he finished.

In the final minutes, Javorcic's team tried everything again to equalize. But Perugia saved the narrow victory over the finish line and will now face Serie A club Genoa in the first round on August 1th.

Conclusion: FC Südtirol showed a solid performance at Perugia on Sunday evening. On offense, however, the White-Reds didn't create enough chances to score. FC Südtirol lost the first competitive game of the new season. The white-reds were narrowly defeated by Perugia in qualifying for the first round of the Coppa Italia.
