FC Südtirol in the week of truth

FC Südtirol saved fourth place in the table, at least temporarily, with a 1-1 draw in the home game against Cittadella on Saturday. However, a win will most likely be needed on the last day of the match if we are to make a direct jump to the playoff semi-finals.

The FCS is still one point ahead of Cagliari and Parma. With a win on Friday evening in Modena, fourth place would be secured, no matter what the competition does. What's good for the FCS: Opponent Modena is actually only playing for the Golden Pineapple on the last match day. In other words: The Emilians are already safely saved, but they can no longer qualify for the promotion games. The task in Modena will probably not be easy. Former FCS coach Attilio Tesser's team won the first leg in the Drusus Stadium 2-0. It was one of the weakest games the Bisoli team has shown this season.

But Cagliari and Parma have even tougher games ahead of them on paper. Gianluigi Buffon & Co. welcome the in-form Venezia, who still need points to take part in the playoffs. Cagliari, on the other hand, is visiting Cosenza, which is still fighting to stay in the league. In the event of a draw, the FCS would be dependent on support. In this scenario, Cagliari and Parma are unlikely to win, otherwise they would have to enter the playoffs in the quarter-finals (May 26th or 27th).

Calculations after calculations

If the FCS loses, Cagliari shouldn't get a point, otherwise fourth place would be gone. The Sardinians won the direct duel. Parma could even get a draw in the event of an FCS defeat because they would be left behind in a direct comparison with FC Südtirol. If all three teams end up with the same number of points, the FCS will qualify directly for the semi-finals because they scored the most points in the direct duels.

Be that as it may, so far only Bari, who are firmly in third place in the table, knows their schedule for the playoffs. While FC Südtirol, Parma and Cagliari are still fighting for positions, two of the six tickets are still free: Venezia, Palermo, Pisa, Reggina, Ascoli and Como are fighting for them on the last matchday. By the way: For the third and fourth place in the regular round, two draws in the semi-finals would be enough to advance. This is another reason why a victory in Modena would be worth gold for the FCS.
