The big traditional club is back: Genoa is celebrating promotion

The oldest football club in Italy is back in Serie A. With a home win over Ascoli, CFC Genoa secured their return to the Italian football upper house in 1893.

During FC Südtirol in Terni mathematically fixed their entry into the promotion playoff, Another team in Genoa celebrated their return to Serie A. CFC Genoa - the oldest still active football club in Italy - won 2-1 at home against Ascoli and is therefore a first division team again from the summer. This was also made possible by Modena's draw against Bari (1:1).

Genoa has achieved direct promotion again after the team was relegated from Serie A last year. The season didn't go well until December, which cost coach Alexander Blessin his job. Alberto Gilardino, who had previously coached the Ligurians' U19s, took over. The 2006 world champion promptly achieved their first win against FC Südtirol. After Gilardino was promoted from interim to head coach, the successful run began. This culminated on Saturday afternoon with the mathematically fixed ascent.

Against Ascoli, Mattia Bani gave the hosts the lead in the sold-out Marassi Stadium (16th). Milan Badelj doubled (63') before Massimo Coda missed a penalty just 3 minutes later. That took revenge, as Ascoli scored through Davide Marsura (68th). However, the equalizer was no longer achieved, so Genoa only had to hope for help from Modena. That worked and the big promotion party began shortly before 16 p.m.
