Manuel Scavone: “Now every football fan in Italy knows me”

Manuel Scavone, how are you today, a week after the incident in the second division game between Lecce and Ascoli?

“Considering the circumstances, I'm doing very well. I still have balance problems due to a problem in my ear and pain in my shoulder. On Tuesday I will travel to Milan for further examinations.”

So football is out of the question for now?

“No, the time of my return is still up in the air. The dizzy spells should subside in the next few days, but a sprained shoulder could force me to take a longer break. But I won't have clarity until next week. Until then, I’ll pass the time at home with my two children.”

“My girlfriend was home alone that evening, there was a lot of excitement” Speaking of children: How did your family experience the anxious hours last Friday?

“My girlfriend was home alone with our children that evening and saw the scene live on television. You can imagine how much excitement there was at that moment. She called a nanny and immediately drove to the hospital with me. Her father suffered a serious head injury in a tobogganing accident five years ago and was in a coma for days. How much were old memories brought back?

“That accident reinforced my family’s worries. My father was also initially given the all-clear before his condition worsened. But thank God it turned out much easier for me. The excitement has now subsided.” “Camera teams and fans streamed into the hospital” What do you remember about the accident?

"Nothing. I still remember how we ran onto the field and the referee started the game and then there was just a black hole. My memories only begin again in the clinic. I was told that I got into the ambulance on my own, but I don’t remember anything about that.”

When did you realize how much attention her injury was attracting?

“When I really came to, many of my teammates were already in the hospital with me. They told me that they couldn't continue playing and the game was abandoned. Then several camera teams and numerous fans streamed into the hospital, so I was taken to a cordoned off area. There I turned on my cell phone and finally understood the full extent of it.” “I’ve never written so many text messages” Has the hype surrounding you died down now?

“I still get visits every day from teammates, former teammates, friends and acquaintances, but things have become a lot quieter now. In any case, I have never written as many text messages, answered calls and given interviews as I have in the past few days. Now every football fan in Italy knows me.” (laughs)

How close are you at the moment to the Lecce team, which is in the middle of the fight for promotion to Serie A?

“I'll be watching the important away game in Venice on Monday on TV, otherwise I'll be in constant contact with my teammates. They stood by me the whole time. This shows how great the cohesion is at Lecce. That's another reason why I'm convinced that we have a good chance of a playoff place (Lecce is currently in third position, editor's note) . I hope that I can take part again soon and build on my recent good performances.”
